Background of the study
Linguistic nationalism—the promotion of language as a symbol of national identity and unity—has become increasingly prominent in the Niger Delta region. The area is characterized by a rich tapestry of indigenous languages and dialects, each imbued with historical, cultural, and political significance. In recent years, movements advocating for the preservation and promotion of local languages have gained momentum as a response to cultural erosion amid globalization (Ibrahim, 2023). This resurgence is not merely a reaction to external cultural influences but also a means of asserting political autonomy and community pride. Grassroots initiatives and language policies in the Niger Delta reflect a broader discourse on self-determination and the vital role of language in maintaining cultural heritage and resisting homogenization (Udo, 2024). Moreover, linguistic nationalism in the region influences educational practices, media representations, and political rhetoric. This study investigates the manifestations and impacts of linguistic nationalism in the Niger Delta, exploring how language functions as both a tool for cultural preservation and a marker of political identity in an evolving socio-political landscape (Ekwueme, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing prominence of linguistic nationalism in the Niger Delta, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis on how language is mobilized as a tool for political and cultural assertion. The region’s diverse linguistic landscape, while a source of rich cultural heritage, also presents challenges for national unity and effective communication (Chukwu, 2024). With globalization and dominant languages exerting pressure, indigenous tongues risk marginalization. This situation creates tension between efforts to preserve cultural identity and the need for a cohesive national language strategy. This study seeks to address these issues by examining the role of linguistic nationalism in the Niger Delta, thereby identifying the balance between promoting indigenous languages and fostering a unified national identity.
